Ternure Road North
Located in Terenure, CYM Rugby club has a rich and colourful history and was founded in 1924/25 by eight members of the C.Y.M.S and operated out of Harrington Street. In 1924 the house and orchard known as St. Marys Terenure was purchased and became our home and playing filed. In the spring of 1925 the first C.Y.M R.F.C side was fielded. On that occassion the teams togged out in the stables accompanied by the horse which was used for grass cutting and rolling the playing fields.
The club palyed in the minor league of the leinster Branch and after capturing the Leauge title in 1928/29 where elevated to Junior level (now J1) where they have remained to this day. In the first season of Junior Level the club reached the metropolitan Cup only losing out to Bective rangers narrowly.
the club has many success over the years won the Spencer Cup in 1965/66 & again retained the tile in 1966/67. In 1949/50 the club was at the forefront of the inception of the Keating Cup for the first junior 7 a side. The cup was presented by our own E.J. Keating and was held on Palm Sunday in Old Beleveders grounds on Anglesea Road. It was an official Leinster branch fixture. All proceeds from the Touranement where given to St. Vincent De Paul. In 1974/75 team from the four provinces where invited to participate to celebrate the 25th anniversary.
Many of our members have contributed to the administration of the game in the Leinster Branch
- E.J Daly CY president of 1939/43 became president fo the Leinster Branch for 1952/53
- Eddie Egan was elected president of the Leinster Branch in 1982/83
From 1986 to 1988 CYM had a successful under 18 & 19 side which made three consequetive Harry Sale Cup semi finals and one of the palyers Alan Dempsey was later selected for the Leinster U19 team which was a remarkable achievement for a player from a junior club.
Over the years many trips have been arranged and probably the trip to South Africa in 1999 to celebrate our 75th anniversary was a trip to remember. 31 members traveled which comprised of palyers, coach and retired palyers. The trip started off in Durban, then down to East London and finally to west Cape Town. Matches where held against Westville Old Boys, our good firends in Buffalo and finally Hamilton Seapoint.
For the over 35's CYM has a triving touring section who have participated in the Golden Oldies Tour to France and more recenlty to San Diego. Travelling parties of more the 30 palyers went on both trips and palyers of all ages togged out for C.Y.M. R.F.C.. Everyone acquited themselves well on the field.
Finally today the club still flourishes and welcomes every new player to our playing field and social scene which our club is renowned for. Hopefully this article will stir you to come join us either on or off the field.
